The Y Center is better than ever!
The Y Center is one of our most beloved programs. From 3:30-7:00, kids can play pool, ping-pong, and Wii, get homework help, relax with friends and mentors, take part in arts, crafts, games, and enjoy healthy snacks. It's a big help to working parents.
This fall, the Y Center is taking on a new focus, in response to local needs. We're dedicating two days a week for grades 4-6, and two days a week for grades 7-12, to enjoy physical activity and healthy cooking. Chris Dettmer, who has actually competed on Iron Chef America, will lead Iron Chef for Kids for grades 7-12. It's based on the Edible Schoolyard developed by Alice Waters, a leader in the "slow food" movement. Students will make cheese, bread, spaghetti sauce, and eventually a full meal for their families.
We're still committed to offering the most affordable after-school care, and especially providing a good bargain for Y members. This year our prices will be:
$100 a month (which comes to $5 day) for YMCA members
$140 a month for non-members
$10 daily drop-in fee for members
$15 for non-members
Everyone is welcome here; we don't turn anyone away based on inability to pay. Please let us know if you need financial assistance.
What a great night with the Globetrotters!
The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters, the "Clown Princes of Basketball," brought their blend of comedy and amazing skill to the Petoskey High School on Monday, January 23. A capacity crowd enjoyed the antics of Flight-Time Lang, Special K Dailey, Airport Greenup, and Too Tall Hall.
A portion of the proceeds benefited the Y's youth sports and afterschool programs. Best of all, kids in the Y Winners basketball program got to meet the players!
As ballboy, Jacob Fletcher of the Y's afterschool program got to bring his family, sit on the players' bench, and received a Trotters shirt and autographed ball. The Globetrotters generously spent time with fans of all ages.
WLXT. WKHQ, Cellular Connection, Reid Furniture, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Little Traverse Youth Choir, Boyne Area Gymnastics, and many other groups lent as hand in this great community event.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who made the night such a success!
