Youth Basketball

Basketball began at the YMCA. It was invented by James Naismith, an instructor at a Y training school, when his supervisor asked him to create a vigorous game that could be played indoors during winter. The first games had nine players, and used a soccer ball with wooden peach baskets fixed to the walls. Elevated goals and rules about contact made for fewer injuries than with rugby or football.

Y-Winners basketball is a great way to introduce young children to the sport. It’s a lightly-competitive, values-based program where all players are given an equal opportunity to participate. The focus is on learning the basic skills and concepts of the game. A typical session includes 30 minutes of practice followed by 45 minutes of game play with an emphasis on having fun! Players will receive T-shirts and awards.
