The first YMCA was founded by volunteers and, by law, YMCAs are led by volunteers on a policy-making board, called a Board of Directors.  The volunteer board sets and oversees policies to ensure that the YMCA fulfills its mission and goals and meets important local needs.  Also, volunteers are involved in all aspects of the YMCA's operations, from leading programs to raising money.
