A little local history

In April 2001, several families contacted the YMCA of USA about establishing a Y in northern Michigan.  A community advisory board was formed to work with state and national Y staff.  By April of 2003, a Founders' Campaign led by local volunteers had raised $300,000.

A Board of Directors was formed, a full-time program director was hired, and in August 2003, the YMCA of Northern Michigan launched an after-school program at Central Elementary School.  By December, the Y had moved into the IOOF building on Howard Street.

In 2005, the Y began to offer a summer day camp program in collaboration with Emmet County Parks and Recreation.  Since then, new programs have continued to grow in partnership with Camp Petosega, Petoskey Public Schools, Harbor Springs Public Schools, Boyne City Public Schools, Center City Gym, American Red Cross, C.O.A.T.S, S.A.F.E., Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts, The First Tee, the Bay View Association, and Boyne Country Sports.

Over 3,000 area kids use the Y-Center or are enrolled in Y programs each year.

In 2011, the Y of Northern Michigan hired its first full-time executive director with the aim of developing a full-service regional facility.
