A beloved program gets better
The Y Center is a great place to hang out with friends. You can play pool, ping-pong, air hockey, Wii and Dance Dance Revolution! Plus you can find crafts, kitchen projects, and adult friends who are easy to talk to. Like all of our programs, the Y Center is about building character.
It's one of our most beloved programs. For eight years, the Y has offered kids a safe, fun place after school. And this fall, it will get even better, in response to local needs.
You may have heard the startling statistics – that two-thirds of area school kids are overweight or obese; that half of area fifth graders test for cardiovascular risk factors. In response, we're dedicating two days a week for grades 4-6, and two days a week for grades 7-12, to enjoy physical activity and healthy cooking. Games and good food -- what's not to like?
Popular staffers from our summer day camp program will lead indoor and outdoor activities. Local growers and grocers will help to introduce healthier foods. And Chris Dettmer, who has actually competed on Iron Chef America, will lead Iron Chef for Kids for grades 7-12. It's based on the Edible Schoolyard developed by Alice Waters, a leader in the "slow food" movement. Students will make cheese, bread, spaghetti sauce, and eventually a full meal for their families.
In a change from years past, once kids arrive, they'll stay with the Y Center staff until they leave for the day.
We're still committed to offering the most affordable after-school care, and especially providing a good bargain for Y members. This year our prices will be:
$100 a month (which comes to $5 day) per child for YMCA members
$140 a month for non-members
$10 daily drop-in fee for members
$15 for non-members
Of course, we don't turn anyone away based on inability to pay. Please let us know if your family may need financial assistance. (And if you'd like to provide a scholarship, we're especially grateful.) Beginning this year, fees must be paid at the time of service.
Our staff will meet with parents on September 1, 5:30 at the Y Center. We look forward to hearing how we can strengthen the program and serve you better.
September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month -- a good time to make sure that our kids are developing healthy habits that will last them for a lifetime. That's what the YMCA is all about.
